Value proposition

A value proposition is the short promise of what a visitor gets from you and why it matters to them. On a homepage it lives in the headline and the line below it.

A value proposition is a short, clear promise of what a customer gets from you, and why that's worth their time or money. It answers the question every new visitor has: what's in it for me?

Where it shows up on a website

On a homepage, the value proposition usually takes up the first screen:

  • The headline says what you offer and what the visitor gets out of it
  • The subheading adds who it's for, how it works or what makes you different
  • An image or proof point supports the promise

Together, these determine whether a visitor understands your offer within the first seconds, the first of the four questions in a first impression.

What makes a value proposition work

  • Specific: "Bookkeeping for freelancers, done every quarter" says more than "Financial peace of mind".
  • About the visitor: it describes what they get, not how great your company is.
  • Clear at a glance: no jargon, no puns that need explaining.
  • Different: a competitor couldn't use the exact same sentence.

Value proposition and headline

The headline is the most visible part of your value proposition, but not all of it. For practical tips and examples of weak and strong headlines, read how to write a homepage headline people understand.
